Are cat fleas and fleas for dogs different?

Technically, there are distinct types of cat and dog fleas, but one can infect the other. Under a microscope, the only way you can tell the difference between the two is.

The most common flea found on dogs and cats in North America, despite its name, is the cat flea, often referred to as Ctenocephalides felis. This form of flea depends on humans as a host as well. It is present on animals such as skunks, foxes, racoons and opossums that are found outdoors.

Even, dogs, cats, humans and other species can be affected by dog fleas, known as Ctenocephalides canis. Dog fleas in Europe tend to be more prevalent, but they can also be found in North America. It is also present on outdoor animals, such as racoons, found in the wild.

The tapeworm parasite can be borne by both cat and dog fleas, which may affect both cats and dogs.
